Calculating the Exact Vertical Jump Target
Your required vertical jump to dunk is a direct function of your standing reach. When looking at dunking, many focus solely on height, but this overlooks wingspan differences. Overhead standing reach is the true starting line. By subtracting your standing reach from the target rim height (plus a clearance buffer), you arrive at the required vertical jump.
How Much Clearance Do You Really Need?
Clearance refers to how much of your hand must clear the rim to push the ball down successfully. Adjusting the clearance slider helps you see how different dunking styles change your vertical jump requirements:
- 1–3 inches (Grazing): You can touch or grab the rim, but you do not have enough leverage to dunk a full-sized ball.
- 6 inches (One-Hand Dunk): The baseline standard. Allows you to cleanly push a size 7 basketball down over the rim.
- 8–10 inches (Two-Hand / Power Dunk): Requires bringing both hands over the rim, which reduces your reach extension slightly, demanding more vertical power.
- 12+ inches (Windmill / Elite Dunks): Reserved for advanced dunk contests and explosive takeoffs.
