Bridging the Gap: Rim Touching vs. Dunking
Touching the rim is a significant milestone for basketball players, but it is far from a dunk. To touch a standard 10ft rim, your fingertips must reach exactly 120 inches. However, a standard size 7 basketball requires a substantial margin of clearance to go over the rim cleanly. You need to clear the hoop by at least 6 inches (reaching 126 inches touch height) to push the ball down into the net.
How Hand Control Changes Your Dunking Target
Your ability to palm the basketball changes your required jump height:
- With Palming (One-Hand): You can carry the ball in one hand, extending your arm fully. You only need **6 inches** of rim clearance (126 inches touch target).
- Without Palming (Two-Hand): You must cradle the ball with two hands. This prevents you from extending a single arm fully, reducing your reach. You need at least **8 inches** of rim clearance (128 inches touch target) to secure the dunk.
This calculator evaluates your current maximum jump touch height (`Standing Reach + Vertical Jump`) and subtracts it from your required target touch height (126" or 128") to find the exact additional vertical inches you must gain.
