Protocols for Measuring Your Vertical Jump

Measuring your vertical jump accurately is essential for tracking athletic progress. There are two primary scientific methods used to calculate vertical leap:

Method 1: Wall Chalk / Reach Differential

This is the simplest and most accessible method. It does not require expensive equipment like a Vertec tower. The protocol is as follows:

  1. Stand flat-footed next to a wall, reach as high as possible with one hand, and mark the wall (with chalk or tape). This is your Standing Reach.
  2. From a standstill (or with an approach, depending on the test), jump as high as possible and tap the wall at the peak of your jump. This is your Max Jump Touch Height.
  3. Subtract your Standing Reach from your Max Jump Touch Height to find your vertical leap.

Method 2: Video Flight Time Analysis

Using slow-motion video captures from modern smartphones, you can calculate your vertical leap using gravitational physics. When you are in the air, your flight is governed by gravity ($g \approx 9.81 \text{ m/s}^2$ or $32.2 \text{ ft/s}^2$). By counting the frames between takeoff and landing, we find your flight time ($t$). Your jump height ($h$) is calculated using the kinematic formula:

This method is highly accurate, provided your takeoff and landing mechanics are uniform (e.g. you do not bend your knees excessively during landing to artificially extend your flight time).
