Calculating Your Target Jumping Height to Dunk
A common question among basketball players is, "How high do I need to jump to dunk?" The answer is not a single number. It is a calculation that depends on your height and your standing reach. Your standing reach determines how close your fingertips are to the rim before you jump, defining the remaining distance you must cover.
To perform a standard one-hand dunk, you must clear the 10-foot rim (120 inches) by at least 6 inches. This ensures that the basketball (which is 9.5 inches in diameter) fits over the rim without getting blocked. This places the required touch height at 126 inches. By subtracting your standing reach from this target height, you find your required vertical leap.
Required Jump Heights by Height and Reach
Assuming average standing reaches, here are the vertical jump heights required for players of various heights to dunk a basketball on a standard 10ft rim:
- 5'8" Player: Average reach is roughly 7'6" (90 inches). Required vertical: **36 inches (91 cm)**.
- 6'0" Player: Average reach is roughly 8'0" (96 inches). Required vertical: **30 inches (76 cm)**.
- 6'2" Player: Average reach is roughly 8'2" (98 inches). Required vertical: **28 inches (71 cm)**.
- 6'4" Player: Average reach is roughly 8'5" (101 inches). Required vertical: **25 inches (64 cm)**.
As these benchmarks demonstrate, a shorter player must compensate for their lower standing reach with a much higher vertical leap. This requires a training program focused on lower-body explosive power and plyometrics.
