The Factors That Limit Your Jumping Height
Your vertical jump potential is a combination of genetics and neuromuscular adaptation. While training can substantially improve your explosive power, every athlete has a theoretical biological cap dictated by muscle fiber type distribution (fast-twitch vs. slow-twitch fibers) and tendon insertion points.
Predicting Your Max Jumping Height
The calculator uses three primary limiters to predict your potential maximum vertical leap:
- Neuromuscular Adaptations: If you are a beginner, your body has not yet optimized motor unit recruitment. You have a high remaining headroom. Advanced jumpers have already optimized these pathways and have less headroom.
- Force-Producing Base: A higher squat-to-bodyweight ratio means you can produce more force. An increase in absolute leg strength raises your potential jumping cap.
- Genetic Baseline: Parents' heights act as structural proxies. Taller genetic lineages typically correlate with longer limbs and larger levers, which change joint moment arms.
