What Is the Ape Index?
The Ape Index is a measure of human body proportions. It evaluates the relationship between your wingspan (arm span) and your height. It can be calculated in two ways:
- Ape Index Ratio: Calculated as `Wingspan / Height`. A ratio of 1.0 means your wingspan is equal to your height. A ratio greater than 1.0 is considered positive.
- Ape Index Difference: Calculated as `Wingspan - Height`. A positive difference (e.g. +2 inches) means your arms are longer than your height.
Significance in Basketball
In basketball, a positive Ape Index is a major competitive advantage. A longer wingspan increases your standing reach, which directly reduces the vertical jump height you need to touch the rim and dunk. It also allows you to block shots and steal passes more effectively. NBA players are heavily scouted for this metric, with the league average ratio sitting at roughly 1.06.
